Department of Animal Production
Organisation
The Department is headed by a Commissioner and has the following three divisions each headed by an Assistant Commissioner:-
- Dairy and Meat Division;
- Animal Nutrition Division.
- Veterinary Public Health Division.
Dairy and Meat Division
Key Functions
- Formulate, review, and implement policies, legislation, standards, plans and strategies in regard to diary and meat production
- Supervise and monitor implementation of dairy and meat policies plans and legislation
- Promote environmentally friendly and economically viable dairy and meat production systems in various eco zones throughout the country
- Establish and maintain an effective dairy and meat production systems
- Provide technical backup and capacity building for dairy and meat production in local governments
- Manage the provision of sustainable services including research for continuous national herd growth and improved dairy and meat production consistent with the prevailing macroeconomic policies
- Provide advice to MAAIF and LGs on the establishment and maintenance of the appropriate infrastructure generally required for dairy and meat production
- Guide and promote use of improved stocking materials and sustainable natural resources management.
Animal Nutrition Division
Key Functions
- Formulate, review and implement policies, legislation, regulations, standards plans and strategies in regard to animal nutrition
- Supervise and monitor implementation of animal nutrition policies, plans and legislation
- Promote environmentally friendly and economically viable animal nutrition systems
- Establish and maintain an effective animal nutrition management information system
- Provide technical backup and capacity building for animal nutrition in local governments
- Provide advice to MAAIF and LGs on establishment and maintenance of the appropriate infrastructure for animal feed production
- Guide and promote the use of improved pastures and rangelands.
Veterinary Public Health Division
Key Functions
- Formulate, review and implement policies, legislation, regulations, standards plans and strategies in regard to both edible and non-edible animal products
- Supervise and monitor implementation of veterinary public health policies, plans and legislation
- Promote environmentally friendly and economically viable veterinary public health systems
- Establish and maintain an effective veterinary public health management information system
- Provide technical backup and capacity building for veterinary public health in local governments
- Provide advice to MAAIF and LGs on establishment and maintenance of the appropriate infrastructure for veterinary public health
- Guide and promote veterinary public health
- Provide technical guidance for planning, siting and construction of slaughter houses and ensure that recommended plans are available to stakeholders and
- Provide technical guidance to establishment of local tanneries and leather craft industry.
