Overview

Uganda’s total surface area covered by water is 18% major lakes include Victoria, Albert, and George/Edward. There are also over 160 minor lakes and many rivers, floodplains and swamps all of which are critical fish breeding and nursery grounds.

Fisheries resources are among the most significant natural endowments in Uganda not only because of their magnitude and diversity, but also because they represent a major source of protein in the diet of most Ugandan, in addition to employment and income for over 1 million people.

The national vision for fisheries in Uganda is ‘’an ensured sustainable exploitation and culture of the fisheries resources at the highest possible levels, there by maintaining fish availability for both present and future generations’’

Mandate

The mandate of DFR is to; promote, support and guide the sector, but also retains responsibility for setting and enforcing the standards and regulations for practices pertaining to fisheries.

Support sustainable, market oriented fish production, management, development, control quality and safety of fisheries products; for improved food security and household income.

Key Functions

  1. Provide technical guidance for formulation, review and implementation of policies, legislation, standards, plans and strategies in the areas of fisheries production, fish capture, regulation and control;
  2. rn
  3. Monitor, inspect, evaluate and harmonize national programs and projects in the sub sector;
  4. rn
  5. Advocate for and mobilize resources for the sub sector;
  6. rn
  7. Build human and institutional capacity for delivery of services in the sub sector;
  8. rn
  9. Develop and promote collaborative mechanisms with national, regional and international institutions and organisations on issues pertaining to the sub sector including management of trans boundary resources;
  10. rn
  11. Provide guidance on the generation, dissemination and application of appropriate technologies and the provision of advisory services for the development of value chains in the sub sector.
