Farm Development

Department Profile

The Department of Farm Development was born from the former Department of Land Resources and Development in 1998 as a result of restructuring of the Ministry of Agriculture, animal Industry and Fisheries.

The Department has 16 established staff at headquarters, Entebbe. In addition, there are established staffs at Mubuku Irrigation Scheme, Doho Rice Scheme, and Vegetable Oil Development Project   (VODP)

The department’s mandate is to support, promote and guide the adoption of appropriate technologies in the development and utilization of Farm machinery, Soils, land and Water Resources for sustainable commercial Agriculture in Uganda.

  • Formulate and review policies, set standards, guidelines and build institutional capacity in farm land planning., agricultural mechanization, farming systems, irrigation, soil & water conservation and water for agricultural production

  • Promote agricultural mechanization through selection, populazation of suitable machinery and expansion of animal traction countrywide.

  • Promote adoption of appropriate soil and water conservation technologies.

  • Promote and develop irrigation, drainage and water management techniques for agriculture, including water harvesting.

  • Initiate, formulate and review policies, plans strategies and programmes on Agricultural Mechanization, Animal Traction, Farm Power and Energy, Agro-Processing and Post Harvest Technologies.

  • Set standards for Agricultural Engineering Technologies, Machinery and Equipment.

  • Establish linkage with research, farmers and extension staff on development and uptake of technologies Agricultural Engineering

  • Provide technical backup, support and guidance of Local Governments.
