The UN General Assembly 1979 pronounced 16th October of every year to be the World Food Day (WFD). It is also the same date when FAO was founded in Quebec, Canada in 1945.  Thus World food Day is a twin celebration whereby the International community and National governments reflect on issues of food security, hunger, malnutrition, and poverty and FAO commemorates the day it was founded and achievements made.

Uganda first celebrated WFD in 1982 and will join the rest of the world to celebrate her 32nd World Food Day/TeleFood (WFD) on Thursday 16th October 2014.

The venue for the National Celebration is the National Crops Resources Research Institute (NaCRRI) – Namulonge in Wakiso district.

The Research Institute hosts the Cassava Center of Excellence and is lauded for generating and disseminating high yielding crop varieties and technologies for a wide range of crop varieties cassava, rice, beans, soy beans and horticultural crops among others; that have ensured food security, household income and foreign exchange earnings for the country.
